Drivers must keep their number clean and free from dirt when driving. The reason for this is excuse it must be readable by police officers as well as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras. A failure to keep it clean and clear could result in the driver being penalised with a £1,000 fine. There is a specific offence under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 of obscuring or allowing a registration mark to be not easily distinguishable,” the DVLA previously explained.
